Summer Kava Drinks: Fresh Recipes for a New Season

Summer is on its way in the Northern Hemisphere. As the weather warms, it’s time for some cool noble kava drinks to enjoy with friends.

It’s also time to try some fresh recipes that mix well with a patio hang.

Kava, known for its calming effects and natural anxiety relief, offers a way to unwind and enjoy as days and evenings with friends grow longer.

Spiced Kava Chai

Elevate your kava experience with our Spiced Kava Chai. This creamy, spiced beverage is perfect for those summer days when you crave something refreshing yet calming.

Ingredients:

• 1 serving Vanuatu Instant Green Kava
• 1 cup almond milk (or any milk of choice)
• 1 teaspoon chai spice mix (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves)
• Ice cubes
• Honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
Optional Add-ins:
• A dash of vanilla extract
• Freshly ground nutmeg for garnish

How to Make:

Mix Vanuatu Instant Green Kava with chai spice mix. Warm the almond milk slightly and combine it with the kava and spices in a shaker. Shake well. Fill a glass with ice, pour the mixture over it, and stir gently. Add honey or maple syrup for sweetness if you like, and garnish with a pinch of nutmeg. Serve chilled and enjoy!

Citrus Bliss

Nothing says summer like a cool refreshing lemonade. Incorporating citrus flavors into your kava drink can feel like sunshine in a cup.

The tanginess of citrus complements the earthy tones of kava, offering even kava skeptics a delicious way to enjoy a relaxing drink. Adding honey or agave can balance the tartness with a touch of sweetness.

For something light, try an Arnold Palmer with prepared kava added. For something more substantial, blend a smoothie.

How to Make:

• ½ frozen banana
• ¾ cup frozen mango
• ½ cup orange juice (fresh if possible)
• ½ cup dairy-free milk
• 1 serving prepared kava
• Ice to taste
• Honey or vegan sweetener to taste

Blend on high until smooth. Add more dairy-free milk if needed.

Herbal Infusions

Summer brings a burst of fresh herbs to gardens and farmer’s markets. Herbs like mint, basil and lemongrass can infuse your kava drinks with a soothing and uplifting aromatic freshness. These herbal infusions create a more complex flavor profile, adding depth and character.

Some ideas:

• Lemongrass pairs well with coconut and pineapple
Try a cucumber-lime kava concoction finished with mint
• Basil-strawberry with lemonade is a classic combo with a twist
• Make a mocktail with kava, tonic, mint, and lime

Berry Refresh

Fresh strawberries start to ripen in late spring, and their sweet, slightly tart flavors make them an excellent addition to your kava drinks. Strawberries can be muddled or blended into your kava concoction, introducing a freshness and natural sweetness that's hard to resist. Not only do they enhance the taste, but they also add a gorgeous splash of color.

Have a bounty of blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries? They all go perfectly with prepared noble kava, sparkling water, and lime.

A Twist of the South Pacific, or  Flavors Close to Home

If you’re experimenting with more exotic flavors, consider adding a touch of tropical fruits like mango, pineapple or coconut. If you’re looking for something to stretch your palate, check out lychee, rambutan, papaya or passion fruit.

Many mango and lychee varieties hit their peak in June and July. If you can get your hands on those fresh mangoes, all the better.

And if you can’t find any of those tropical fruits that tempt you, your local market is sure to have something amazing to try. Fresh berries, melons, cherries, plums, and peaches bring incredible flavor to kava drinks and smoothies.

Preparing Your Summer Kava Drinks

It’s fun to try new recipes and change up your seasonal kava experience, but kava needs to be prepared carefully and reverently.

Follow instructions from your Bula Kava House kava carefully, and then feel free to add flavors as you like. Note the amount you drink, especially as you’re tasting and adjusting.

Ground kava and micronized/instant kava need different preparation methods. You can’t just toss ground kava into a smoothie without preparing it first or straining it thoroughly. If you have questions about how to prepare your kava, please let us know.
