Kava Essentials: 2 Kava Recipes to Make at Home You're Certain to Enjoy

As most kava enthusiasts can attest, overcoming kava’s taste represents one of the biggest challenges facing first time drinkers.

For all of the wonderful benefits drinking kava can provide, noble varieties often have a pungent flavor that can provide quite the punch to the unprepared palette. Many first time visitors to our Portland kava bar have a hard time accepting the taste of pure kava, which makes them less likely to try kava again in the future.

Fortunately, many experienced kava connoisseurs have tips and tricks for making their own favorite varieties of kava a little more palatable. Most use some type of fruit juice, but we know others who use everything from soy milk to kombucha to create a more pleasant flavor.

At Bula Kava House, we have two absolutely fantastic recipes that mixes kava into a light and refreshing beverage that both kava novices and connoisseurs alike really enjoy.

Introducing The Kava Kolada

This simple recipe makes the perfect solution for easily improving the taste of any type of kava. It only takes a few minutes to make and has a flavor that everyone will love.

Ingredients : (2 servings)

Instructions:

Step 1.) Add the micronized kava, coconut milk, and pineapple juice to electric blender.
Step 2.) Blend for 2 to 3 minutes until the micronized kava root fully blends into the mix.
Step 3.) Poor over ice.

Simple and convenient, this recipe makes a great choice for enjoying kava outside on warm days and when relaxing at home. If you want to try a frozen kava beverage, try adding the ice to the blender after mixing the kava. Pulse blend the mixture for 10 to 20 seconds or until it reaches the desired consistency.

If you don’t have a pulse blender, you can mix ingredients in a pitcher or large bowl with a wooden spoon before pouring over ice.

Relax on Your own Beach with a Kavajito

This twist on a classic recipe offers a refreshing sweet and sour recipe that makes a great choice for any occasion. We've always found that ginger does wonders to balance the earthy taste of kava, and this recipe really highlights what we think is a great combination.

Ingredients: (1 serving)

  • 4 oz. freshly brewed kava
  • 2 oz. ginger beer
  • The juice of 1/2 a lime (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1 sprig of mint
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • Ice

Instructions:

Step 1.) Muddle mint leaves together with sugar in a pint glass or cocktail shaker.

Step 2.) Add kava, lime juice, and ice and shake or stir vigorously.

Step 3.) Pour into a glass over ice and top off with ginger beer.

This recipe offers a lot of room for customization. If you want a slightly sweeter drink, add more sugar. For more tartness, add another tablespoon of lime and reduce the ginger beer by half.
